Dominic McIvor

Paintbox Tutor & Artist

Hi, I’m Dom and I teach the Half Day Drawing and Painting (AM and PM) at Paintbox on a Friday. I also teach Weekend Workshops and Summer Schools.

The Half Day classes are about making drawing and painting accessible to everyone; breaking down the formal elements in an informal, supportive environment. We get a lot of beginners in the class but also have lots of returners. This mix keeps the class exciting, hard working and progressive. I teach to a group but I work with the students individually to make learning tailored to each person.

I studied at Grays School of Art and graduated with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art.

I learned at a lot at Grays, whilst the course was rooted in drawing we were taught to be broad and encouraged to have a multidisciplinary approach to making. I was also pushed in a supportive environment which I feel is really important in my teaching.

My artwork has changed throughout the years. From material manipulations through rigorous, time based and repetitional exercises into more observational every day studies. The common threads between both ways of making are: the importance of drawing in adding and subtracting material and the unexpected. This change of pace between slow and fast making is what I’m most excited by.

In my own time, I run and I’ve just signed up for my 7th marathon, so I’m a glutton for punishment. 7 seems like a good number but it’s not an even number… Like Jemma and Lynsey, I also have a dog that takes charge of my life – Rafa, a little naughty French bulldog. But most of the time, whenever I get a free minute I try to get in to my studio and make a mess!
