My work is explores light and place through the subject of landscape. Colour  – its subtleties and strengths found within the Scottish landscape offer endless possibility for exploration.

This body of work takes the form of two series of landscapes with very different colour palettes: one exploring the diminishing light at the end of the day and the other responding to vibrant spring colour and light reflected on water.

My work is not a direct representation of a particular landscape, but it is always rooted in specific places where I have made studies. I sketch in pencil, ink and pastel en plain air – whatever the weather – enjoying familiar places that are ever different. I use these sketches as references for studio work and they take me back to the flood of perception that came as I worked outside and the feelings that were evoked by what I saw.
