Wild winter

This body of work is inspired by the developing landscapes of rewilding projects in Scotland, communicating a sense of place and of hope for the future through abstracted line, colour and shape. I visited a number of rewilding projects over the winter of 2023-24 and was awestruck by the scale of the projects and beauty of these places. Even in the depths of winter, the air was alive with birdsong. As I walked, I became aware of a rich tapestry of lichens, insect-life hiding under every leaf and signs of wild animals.

I was drawn to the muted wintery oranges and purples of the trees and bracken and to the luminescent greens and blues of lichens seen under a digital microscope. I drew sketches on site and developed these into abstract compositions through mono-printing back in the studio. The paintings in this exhibition emerged from a process of layering abstract compositions with references to my original location sketches and photographs. Treading a delicate path between observation and abstraction, the finished pieces hold a sense of the weight, energy and aliveness of these places.
