Drawing is fundamental to any practice in visual art. It is perhaps the very first way that we make marks as infants, and stays with us as adults, as a short hand method for recording experiences and ideas, as a preparatory stage for work in a different medium, and also as a creative medium in its own right.
In this one day, year long course, aimed at students with some experience, students will explore drawing within its widest definition. Materials ranging from traditional drawing tools such as pencils and charcoal, will be used alongside oil bar, graphite, inks, soft pastels, and oil pastels. As well as line, mark making, and tone, students will revisit perspective, composition, and the all important relationship between tone and colour.

The course will be largely based around drawing from direct observation of still life set ups in the studio, but will also include periodic days outside in the gardens of Cockenzie House, and the harbours and coastline just on the doorstep of the school. Most days will start with a slide presentation relevant to that week’s subject.

Developing a consistent sketchbook drawing practice both at the school and away from the Paintbox studio, is central to the course.

By the end of the year, students can expect to be able to use drawing as an essential tool in the making of their work in whatever medium, but also crucially, will have pushed at the limits that the medium can be perceived as having, to confidently create drawings that are artworks in their own right.
