Working outdoors is a wonderful way to directly experience your subject matter and it can be used in different ways. Many artists gather information on-site before developing it or using it as inspiration back in the studios. Other artists work fast and furious to make finished work in one sitting – this may take the form of carefully realised drawings or pieces that collaborate with the wind and the rain. Kittie is a keen advocate of working outdoors and will lead students through several different approaches to working en plein air. A number of wet and dry drawing materials in small-scale sketchbooks and on loose paper will be explored, alongside pre-preparing papers, responsive mark-making and note-taking as a memory jogger. Time will also be spent considering ways to organise an en plein air tool kit and methods of developing work back in the studio.
