Explore how to make a figure composition using studies made from paintings by the old masters, which will then inspire studio-based drawings and paintings made directly from the live model.
We will begin our research with a trip to the Scottish National Gallery to spend the day drawing from selected paintings in the collection, with a focus on composition and figure interactions. Back in the studio, over the course of the next three days we will make studies from the model, using collage to think about the arrangement and grouping of figures. We finish with a painting, which although routed in the past will be made with consideration of contemporary approaches.
You will need to bring a sketchbook and if you want to work on stretched canvas you’re very welcome, all other materials will be provided.
