The Eye and The Mind – Cezanne in Still Life

This 2 Day Workshop will take inspiration from, and pay homage to the work of Paul Cezanne.

Working from a rich still life set up, we will consider everything from the composition, to the use of colour and paint application in order to gain an insight into Cezanne’s working practice.

The workshop will be introduced with an in-depth discussion about Cezanne’s approach to still life, moving onto colour theory which will then move into a demonstration on palette work.  We will then start making a small painting focusing on layering and gesture to support and depict the mood and atmosphere of the still life.

The second day will allow students to create a bigger sustained Cezanne inspired painting. We will start the day reminding ourselves of Cezanne’s strategies to create a rich painting, with a focus on palette work to build strong a strong painting, full of observation and intensity.
